Computer Systems Administrator
The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of Virginia (FPD) is accepting applications for the position of Computer Systems Administrator (CSA) in our Alexandria or Richmond office. Pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, the office provides legal representation to indigent defendants in federal criminal cases and related matters.
Duties: Manages the operations of all IT-based systems to ensure reliability and effectiveness, safeguards the integrity of the FPD’s data, and provides support for FPD attorneys and staff in their use of and access to IT-based systems and data. Develops up-to-date procedures for user and visitor access, backup routines, disaster recovery, inventory control, and virus/spyware protection measures. Develops equipment upgrade schedules while testing and performing routine upgrades of hardware and software. Assists with the evaluation, recommendation, and procurement of network hardware, office IT equipment, and related software. Maintains technical and user documentation for all systems and applications. Supervises an Assistant Computer Systems Administrator. Related responsibilities include evaluating the efficiency of litigation support technology to ensure that it is responsive to the litigation team’s needs. Maintains ongoing familiarity with new software and hardware technology, and advises Public Defender, Administrative Officer and Financial Administrator regarding potential acquisitions. Works with outside vendors in all phases of electronic or other discovery management.
Qualifications: This position requires excellent communication skills with people who are not necessarily proficient in software operation, and the ability to work in a team environment with frequent interruptions. The CSA must be professional and approachable. Minimum qualifications for this position require a high school diploma or the equivalent, and at least 5 years of specialized experience with PCs and networking in a Windows Active Directory environment consisting of Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016/2019. Must have excellent troubleshooting skills, experience with Microsoft Office, WordPerfect, Lotus Notes, Symantec Endpoint Protection, and Malwarebytes. Experience with legal IT, litigation-support tools, and federal government are highly desirable. All education, experience, training and certifications will be verified. The individual must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications within a range from $72,030 to $102,663 for Alexandria or $66,217 to $94,378 for Richmond (JS 11/1 – JS 13/1). This position offers federal employment benefits, including health and life insurance, retirement, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan. Salary is payable only by Electronic Funds Transfer (direct deposit). The position is “at-will” employment. This position is in the excepted service and does not carry the tenure rights of the competitive civil service.
