The Alexandria office has opportunities for mitigation interns for the fall, spring and summer semesters. Mitigation interns are usually Masters level students studying Social Work, or Forensic Psychology. Interns will have the unique opportunity to work closely with the entire defense team in developing sentencing strategies and social work resources for clients. Intern duties include: researching and developing sentencing strategies for clients; cultivating positive relationships with clients, their families and their support systems; researching client-specific mental health treatments and programs; identifying mental health experts to assist the defense team; participating in supporting treatment courts, including drug court and veterans court; locating sentencing records and witnesses; reviewing mitigation records for relevant mental health information; and developing client social histories for use in sentencing memorandums. Persons interested in applying for a mitigation internship should submit a cover letter, resume and writing sample to Ellen Shultz, MSW, Mitigation Investigator (ellen_shultz@fd.org; 703.600.0827).
